We Make Technology Work For Your Business

Business Cyber Attacks during the Holidays

Getting closer to all the big holidays, we can’t wait to spend more time with our families but guess what, Cyber Hackers love this time. This is the best time to actually attack businesses and home technology.

Even if you think you are not on your computer during this time, that doesn’t mean you are not going to get attacked.

Really, ransomware hackers love regular weekends, too. But a long one? When everyone’s off carousing with family and friends and studiously avoiding anything remotely office-related? That’s the good stuff.  The FBI and the Cyber security and Infrastructure Security Agency underscores how serious the threat has become.

The appeal to attackers is pretty straightforward. Ransomware can take time to propagate throughout a network, as hackers work to escalate privileges for maximum control over the most systems. The longer it takes for anyone to notice, the more damage they can do. “The less chance of the attack being detected and interrupted.”

Even if it is caught relatively soon, many of the people in charge of dealing with it are potentially poolside, or at the very least harder to get a hold of than they would be on a normal Tuesday afternoon.

It’s important to remember also that ransomware is a constant threat, Cyber attacks tend to spike on Mondays, when victims have returned to their offices to find their data encrypted.

That said, there are steps companies and individuals can take to better protect themselves from hacks, both ahead of a long weekend and beyond. The FBI and CIA’s recommendations echo best practices for most cyber security situations:

  • Don’t click on suspicious links.
  • Make an offline backup of your data.
  • Use strong passwords.
  • Make sure your software is up to date.
  • Use two-factor authentication.
  • Maybe keep a few extra people on call this weekend, just in case.

Cyber Crime for Small and Medium Businesses

Cyber attacks on all businesses, but particularly small to medium sized businesses, are becoming more frequent, targeted, and complex.

According to Accenture’s Cost of Cyber crime Study, 43% of cyber attacks are aimed at small businesses, but only 14% are prepared to defend themselves.

The most common types of attacks on small businesses include:

  • Phishing/Social Engineering: 57%
  • Compromised/Stolen Devices: 33%
  • Credential Theft: 30%

By understanding the targets of attacks and consequences, as a business leader you can minimize the potential, gain value in your cyber security efforts, and even prevent future attacks.
